The first Berlin 5G Week - supported by IEEE Standards Association and IEEE SDN Initiative, IEEE Communications Society, Fraunhofer FOKUS, Fraunhofer HHI, the 5G Berlin Testbed and Berlin Partner - was a huge success. In sum, more than 400 experts from 30 nations attended the five different events related to 5G standardization, technologies, platforms, application domains and emerging testbeds, which all took place in the Fraunhofer Forum in the center of Berlin, Germany, October 31st - November 4th. The main target was achieved, namely to bring together international key experts from industry and academia currently working on the constituting 5G-key-enabling technologies for building the flexible software-based infrastructure for the emerging gigabit society at a location of high relevance for 5G development and early adoption, and to provide a social hub for creating new international 5G partnerships and friendships. Major operators, such as AT&T, Verizon, NTT Docomo, KDDI, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Telefonica, Orange, Telecom Italia, Telia, as well as key vendors like Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei, Samsung, NEC, Intel, and many more joined the events.
The main driver for this Berlin 5G Week is the new Berlin 5G Testfield initiative that aims to bring 5G technologies onto the streets of Berlin in early 2017 to obtain early practical experiences with emerging 5G technologies, platforms, and applications in order to shape new 5G standards, products, and solutions. Berlin is committed to act as one of the major global 5G capitals, empowered by its various high caliber research organizations and universities, the vivid and still growing Berlin start-up scene and the various local business sectors and industries as early adopters of new 5G solutions.

Main findings of the Berlin 5G Week addressing the progress of 5G technologies in both the radio and core network areas affected by the ongoing softwarization are that related 5G technologies are advancing fast and results from prototypes are quite promising.
Finding globally harmonized 5G frequency bands as well as setting up the right network infrastructures for the three different 5G application categories, such as massive multimedia (driven by high bandwidth demands), massive Internet of Things (driven by very high number of devices) and ultra reliable mission critical communications (driven by low latency and high security demands) are still challenging. However, the first standards of 5G radio access network are planned to be established in 2018 by utilizing available frequency bands identified by WRC-15 or regional frequencies such as 28 GHz to start new businesses for these application categories. Moreover, these different categories will be addressed by the provision of adequate optimized 5G network slices, making use of current SDN/NFV/MEC technologies and reusing partially existing access network technologies until the 5G radio interfaces are fully available.
It becomes obvious that 5G will be rolled out in an evolutionary approach, starting in the different regions of the world with different focal points in the architecture. E.g., while Olympic Games in Korea (2018) and Japan (2020) probably demand a focus on massive multimedia, other regions may focus on the support of Industrial Internet and/or applications in the automotive domain.
5G is a very complex domain based on the integration of different technologies. It is, as well, of global relevance and thus the Berlin 5G week proved to be a valuable vehicle to unite the different experts for a short time in a major 5G capital.

IEEE CSCN'16 from Oct 31st to Nov 2nd 2016
IEEE Conference on Standards for Communications and Networking
The Berlin 5G Week started on Monday, October 31st with the 2nd international IEEE Conference on Standards for Networks and Communications (CSCN) entitled "Shaping 5G - Towards 5G Standards". IEEE CSCN featured four international keynote speeches (from NTT Docomo, Nokia, Orange, and Tokyo University), two highly international panels (one on 5G RAN
technologies and one on Network Slicing and Softwarization in 5G) and 36 technical papers presented in 11 technical sessions. IEEE CSCN enforced a strict review process (at least three reviews per paper with at least one reviewer from industry) and acceptance policy (35%) to guarantee a high caliber technical program.
Three additional demos were shown related to 5G technologies. Attendees came from 26 nations proving CSCN to be a highly international conference, discussing topics of global relevance with a strong emphasis on industry participation. The event was sponsored by NTT Docomo, Nokia, Orange, the IEEE Standards Association,
and the IEEE SDN Initiative and brought together more than 100 experts from 26 nations. Key topics addressed in the keynotes and panels included the new 5G radio access network technologies and 5G softwarization and network slicing. In parallel to IEEE CSCN and in line with its mission, the new IEEE Communication Society 5G Rapid Response Standardization Activity Group ran a standardization meeting on Tuesday, November 1st, 2016, under the leadership of Alex Gelman, identifying new 5G standard items addressed by this group. IEEE 5G Summit on Nov 2nd 2016
5G Prototyping - Emerging Testbeds, First Trials, and Relevant Standards
On Wednesday, November 2nd, the Berlin 5G Week featured the one-day IEEE 5G Summit themed "5G Prototyping - Emerging Testbeds, First Trials, and Relevant Standards" in parallel to the last day of CSCN. This summit, co-sponsored by IEEE Communications Society, IEEE Germany Section and supported by IEEE SDN/NFV Initiative,
National Instruments, and Interdigital was the ninth one in the series (www.5gsummit.org) and third one in Europe, and brought together more than 120 people from 20 nations. The program featured speakers from Europe, Asia and the US, including the Senate of Berlin, Boston Consulting Group, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, NTT Docomo,
KDDI Research, Telefonica, Telecom Italia, AT&T, Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Intel, Nec, National Instruments, and many more. Additional demos showed different aspects of 5G technologies.
After the opening of the event by the main organizing chairs, namely Prof. T. Magedanz, Dr. T. Haustein, Dr.. A. Dutta, Prof. T. Taleb, and Prof. R. Fish, the new Berlin 5G Testfield Initiative was introduced by State Secretary H. Reckers and Cornel Pampu from the Senate of Berlin showing the commitment of the city of Berlin to
become the 5G capital of Germany and beyond.
The first session provided a global vision of 5G with speakers from the Boston Consulting Group (Dr. Heinz Thorsten Bernold, USA), Vodafone Ambassador (Dr. Hartmut Kremling, Germany), NTT Docomo (Dr. Satoshi Suyama), and Ericsson (Mr. Lars Bergendahl, Sweden). It became clear that the ambiguous plans for the global 5G rollout are on track
and first trails were very promising.
In the second session, the 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) aspects were addressed by Deutsche Telekom (Hans Einsiedler, Germany), KDDI Research (Fumio Watanabe, Japan), Intel (Ali Sadri, USA), Huawei (David Wessel, Canada), and Samsung (Maziar Nekovee, UK). They showed readiness of 5G RAN using millimeter-wave and Massive MIMO, and also raised practical
challenges such as cost effective deployment strategy and virtualization of control plane over multiple operators.
The third session addressed 5G Network Softwarization and Verticals and four talks from Telefonica (Dr. Diego Lopez, Spain), Tokyo University (Prof. Akihiro NAKAO, Japan), NEC Europe Labs (Dr. Heinrich J Stuettgen, Germany), and Nokia Bell Labs (Mr. Hannu Flinck, Germany) raised the importance of the flexible softwarized 5G network platform enabled by
NFV and network slicing to adapt to the heterogeneous demands of different application domains.
The last session was devoted to Joint 5G Projects and Trials and featured seven talks from Fraunhofer HHI (Dr. Thomas Haustein), Univ. Oulu (Prof. Matti Latva-aho, Finland), CEA-LETI (Dr. Emilio Calvanese Strinati, France), Huawei (Dr. Riccardo Trivisonno, Germany), NTT Docomo (Dr. Anass Benjebbour, Japan), Interdigital (Mr. Robert Gazda, UK), Telecom Italia (Dr. Dario Sabella, Italy)
providing a snapshot on ongoing testbed developments performed mainly by international research projects. These talks provided the basis for a final, highly interactive panel on the importance of 5G testbeds.
A subsequent get-together within the demo space enabled networking amongst the delegates.

Workshop - Federated 5G/SDN/NFV/MEC Testbed on Nov 2nd 2016
colocated with 5G Summit, 1:00pm –7:30pm
The IEEE SDN Initiative and EIT Digital ran, as part of the 5G Summit, an interactive workshop on SDN/NFV/MEC/5G Open Source Toolkits and Testbeds in the afternoon.
As part of this workshop the first open source SDN Testbed Toolkit catalogue established by the IEEE SDN Outreach committee was launched.

FOKUS FUSECO FORUM 2016 from Nov 3rd to Nov 4th 2016
Understanding 5G Application Drivers and Technology Evolution towards Softwarized 5G Networks
The 7th FOKUS FUSECO FORUM (FFF) themed "Understanding 5G Application Drivers and Technology Evolution towards Softwarized 5G Networks" took place at the end of the week on November 3rd and 4th, 2016, representing the anchor point of this event week.
Again, also this year more than 220 experts from 32 nations attended this intense two-day event.
As usual the event was organized in three complementary parallel tracks (5G access network, 5G core network and platform, Industrial Internet) starting with three tutorials and followed by three interactive workshops in the afternoon.
A get-together on Thursday evening united the different expert groups in the "Ballhaus Berlin" and provided a good basis for relaxed networking.
